About the Jade Compendium

This blog is run by Sweetrobin's K-hole, Dany the Gamer-Empress of Leng, and Ashara F.D. Dayne.

Why ASOIAF Theories?

Have you ever been bored? Well, imagine you are the most bored you have ever been in your life, and also you have read ASOIAF. What can you do? Basically nothing except think about how R+L=J. But now imagine you have been thinking that since 2013 (or even longer, in Sweetrobin's K-hole's case). After year 6 or 7, R+L=J starts to get a little boring, and your find yourself wondering... what if R+L=...D? R+A=D? B+A=J? Baby Aegon really did have a body double? No no, Aegon is FAegon...

Delusions like these eventually lead you to various forums and Youtube channels, and before you know it, you're completely insane. And you've watched several hours of Preston Jacobs and unironically think Quentyn is probably fine andhas a dragon, and you think you've discovered an obscure quote in ASOS in an Arya chapter that, somehow, you think links to his survival. And now you want to tell everyone about it. Many such cases!

The Jade Compendium

Seriously: as an activity to pass some time, we decided to reread the series 'carefully', to even 'take notes' in preparation for discussions. I had left AFFC unfinished in sad circumstances and we were both dissatisfied with the direction the story was taking in the HBO adaptation, but we had heard the GRRM himself had been annoyed by how some plot threads resolved (or never even made it into the show), and this gave us hope that Winds has something interesting in store for us.

But with five sizeable main books, three novellas, a history, and a world book, it was difficult to know where to start gathering clues. We started looking at magic, science fiction, and mythology-based obscure themes and theories: and we ended up at basically the biggest, broadest ideas that we could find. History and myth of Westeros and the reaches of Essos captured our imaginations with their numerous references to HP Lovecraft and famous sci fi and fantasy series. If you are interested in the following, we hope you will check back during our long watch for Winds:

repetition and retelling of stories, archetypes, across history;
prophecy, unsettling magic/creatures/locations, the meddling of gods;
symbols such as colors, gems, numbers (such as 7), used as stand-ins for characters and ideas;
and patterns and rules that govern the World that GRRM is building.

We think that George's references to disturbing science fiction stories are not 'easter eggs' but indicative of the types of themes and just wacky stuff that he finds fun and interesting and would not be against sprinkling into his books. We try to follow things through to their conclusions even if it wouldn't be a popular one with fans. We draw in other works by George and other sci fi and fantasy writers, as well as world mythology. Because George is a self-proclaimed gardner, we do not believe that all these things must happen: rather, we believe George has set up many potential paths that will fit with the world and its workings, and he has many options for many characters that will be totally 'believable' in-world.

Please check back soon for a reading list of other works we think may be of interest to ASOIAF fans!
